These fish originally come from Paraguay; Rio Paraná basin in Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina. It’s also known from the Rio Uruguay, Uruguay.
This fish can get to eight inches in total length in the wild, as a rule not as large in Aquariums. This species was discovered in 1972 by Heiko Bleher, from Frankfurt, West Germany and Thomas Horeman, London, England. The fish seen in the hobby are captive-bred and wild caught specimens are rare.
